No ID released for man dead in Bellingham standoff

BELLINGHAM - Police continue to investigate the circumstances of a seven-hour standoff at an apartment complex that ended with one man dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Tuesday, June 10.

Officials are waiting until an autopsy is done before they confirm the identity of the man who died in the standoff, Bellingham Police Lt. Bob Vander Yacht said Wednesday. The autopsy should take place Thursday or early Friday.

"That's going to be really telling to us," Vander Yacht said of the autopsy.

The incident began around 9:30 a.m. when someone fired a gun in a second-story apartment at 1716 E. Sunset Drive. The bullet passed into an occupied unit next door.

A SWAT team was brought in after failed attempts to reach the man police believe fired the shot. After several hours, the man was found dead inside the apartment. Police spent Wednesday investigating the circumstances surrounding the standoff, Vander Yacht said.
