Extra patrols ticketed Whatcom drivers for seatbelt, cellphone violations

More than 100 tickets were issued during the extra "Click It or Ticket" patrols in Whatcom and San Juan counties from May 19 to June 1.

During the patrols, law enforcement issued 40 seatbelt infractions and 67 cellphone/texting tickets.

Last year they wrote 130 seatbelt infractions and 71 cellphone tickets in Whatcom County and a total of 2,963 seatbelt violations and 1,897 cellphone tickets statewide.

The patrols included the Bellingham and Ferndale Police Departments, the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office and Washington State Patrol.

This campaign was part of Target Zero, Washington's goal to end traffic deaths and serious injuries in the state by 2030. Details: targetzero.com.
