Happy to see slower community growth

An article in the June 2 Herald treats population growth as a race, with the trophy going to the city with the most rapid growth. It uses phrases like "Bellingham ... lagging," "sluggish growth," and "promising" to describe rapid growth.

Ask yourself whether population growth helps or exacerbates the problems we face in Whatcom County: does growth help you, your family, neighbors and communities? Higher growth means more traffic congestion and delays, more conflicts over water supply, crowded schools and higher taxes to pay for the infrastructure required by more people. Rather than promoting population growth, we should adopt policies to discourage growth unless we are sure that more people will improve the quality of life for those who are already here.
