Quotes from Hitler in Lynden High School yearbook stir concern

LYNDEN - The Lynden School District is investigating how three quotes from Adolf Hitler made it into the 2013-14 yearbook at Lynden High School.

The quotes were submitted by three graduating seniors and were printed under their pictures.

"We don't condone quotes by Adolf Hitler or what he represents in any fashion," district Superintendent Jim Frey said.

The quotes are:

-- "If you want to shine like the sun, first you have to burn like it."

-- "He alone, who owns the youth, gains the future."

-- "Through clever and constant application of propaganda, people can be made to see paradise as hell, and also the other way around, to consider the most wretched sort of life as paradise."

Frey said school officials will examine how the quotes made it past the supervision and review process.

The yearbook does have an adviser.

Moving forward, Frey said officials will focus on fixing the process and making sure that students understand the meaning of such quotes.
