Whatcom County libraries are marking the start of their Spark Summer Reading Challenge with science and magic presentations at several locations.
- Dan the Magic Man offers humor and magic in a performance for ages 4-11 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 7, at the Everson Library; from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at the Deming Library; and from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at the Blaine Library.
- The libraries' Summer Reading Kickoff features the Pacific Science Center's "Physics on Wheels" exhibit for elementary school-age children. See lids pop off cans and electrified hair stand on end, plus many other exhibits for hands-on scientific fun. Participants will see how a kaleidoscope works, watch an experiment with a Fresnel lens (used in lighthouses), learn how static electricity travels, feel the effect of an electromagnet, and create an electrical circuit to power a light bulb.
Presentations are 3-6 p.m. Friday, June 6, at the Ferndale Library; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at the new South Whatcom Library in Sudden Valley.
Spark Museum of Electrical Invention is bringing some of its modern equipment and historic artifacts for kindergarten through fifth-grade demonstrations from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 7, at the Lynden Library; and from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, at the new South Whatcom Library in Sudden Valley.
"Science Magic" programs for kindergartners through fifth grade are 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at the Island Library; 3:45-4:45 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at the North Fork Library; 10:30-11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, at the Blaine Library; 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 21, at the South Whatcom Library; 2-3 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, at the Ferndale Library.
