Graduation season starts June 5 in Whatcom County


High school and college students throughout Whatcom County are readying their cap-tossing arms, as graduation season is getting underway.

The first ceremonies take place Thursday, June 5, for Lynden Christian and Lummi Tribal high schools, with local college and university graduations taking place later in the month.

Western Washington University has a few notable names speaking at its graduation ceremonies Saturday, June 14. Former Washington state governor Gary Locke will speak at the 9 a.m. ceremony, Astoria Holdings Vice President Jerry Thon will speak at the 12:30 p.m. ceremony, and Princeton University professor Douglas Massey will speak at the 4 p.m. ceremony. Locke, who has served as the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and ambassador to China, will receive an honorary doctorate from WWU for his career in public service.

Here's a list of graduations taking place this month throughout Whatcom County.

-- Lynden Christian High School: 7 p.m. Thursday, June 5, in the Lynden Christian football stadium or the gym if it's raining.

-- Lummi Tribal High School: Thursday, June 5, with dinner at 5 p.m. and a graduation ceremony at 6 p.m. at the Lummi Nation School gymnasium.

-- Blaine High School: 6 p.m. Friday, June 6, at Blaine High School.

-- Bellingham High School: 7 p.m. Friday, June 6, in the Bellingham High School gym.

--Nooksack Valley High School: 7 p.m. Friday, June 6, on the Sid Lambert Field at Nooksack Valley High School or in the gym, depending on weather.

-- Lynden High School: 7 p.m. Friday, June 6, at Lynden High School.

-- Ferndale High School: 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, at Civic Stadium.

-- Squalicum High School: 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, in the Squalicum High School gym.

-- Sehome High School: 3 p.m. Saturday, June 7, in Western Washington University's Carver Gymnasium.

-- Windward High School: 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, in the Windward High School gym.

-- Mount Baker High School: 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, on the Bob Tisdale Field at Mount Baker High School.

-- Options High School: 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, in the Bellingham High School theater.

-- Explorations Academy: 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12, in the lower level theater at Explorations Academy.

-- Meridian High School: 7 p.m. Thursday, June 12, in the Meridian High School gym.

-- Western Washington University: Saturday, June 14, in Carver Gymnasium. Ceremonies will start at 9 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. Tickets are required for admission. For those without tickets, the ceremonies will be broadcast on viewing screens in the Science, Mathematics and Technology Education building. Off campus, the ceremony will be broadcast live on Whatcom County's Comcast cable service channel 26 and streamed live at

-- Whatcom Community College: 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 20, at the Pavilion Gym. Tickets are required. Those without tickets can watch a live video feed in the Heiner Theater.

-- Bellingham Technical College: 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, at Mount Baker Theatre, 104 N. Commercial St., Bellingham. Tickets are required to attend.
