Climbers Bivouac opens for busy Mount St. Helens climbing season

June 1, 2014

Climbers Bivouac, the primary camping spot for people climbing Mount St. Helens, is open. Forest Road 81-830 to the campground and the Ptarmigan Trail opened last week.

Drivers are cautioned that grading and guardrail repair are taking place on the road.

Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument officials warn climbers to “use extreme caution and stay off cornices (overhanging snow) at the crater rim. Please stay back 10-15 feet from the edge of the snow.” Ice axes and crampons are recommended for the climb.

Permits are sold out for July and August. For permit information, visit the Mount St. Helens Institute website at mshinstitute.org.
