Lyncs out after two tight losses

Lynden Christian's softball team took two close losses in the Class 1A Softball State Tournament on Friday, May 30, at Columbia Playfields in Richland.

The Lyncs lost 10-9 to Connell in the first round and took a 4-2 loss in the consolation first round to Woodland.

After going down 3-0 in the first inning, LC had a five-run third inning to close the gap.

"We had some jitters, some nervous excitement," Lynden Christian coach Mitch Moorlag said in a phone interview. "We have been playing tight defense for awhile now and today we had a few too many miscues. I'm proud of the way they battled and came back."

Lynden Christian committed five errors to Connell's one.

Connell came back with three runs in the fourth and four in the sixth. LC came up just short with a four-run sixth and had the game-tying run called out at the plate.

"It could have gone either way," Moorlag said. "That would have tied it with runners in scoring position."

Almost immediately after the opening loss, the Lyncs had to come back to play Woodland.

"We had about 15-20 minutes before the next game and just came out flat to start," Moorlag said.

The Woodland pitcher was able to hold the Lyncs to just two runs on seven hits in the second game, even as they corrected their defensive miscues from the first game.

Luna's day in the circle impressed Moorlag, as she pitched the entirety of the first game and part of the second. She also went 1 for 4 at the plate in the first game.

Lexi Vander Griend was the big offensive player, going a combined 3 for 5 with two RBI.

Lynden Christian graduates seven starters as its season ends. Five of those have started for three years.

"I'm proud of the women they've become and they leave us a better program than when they came into it," Moorlag said. "Kasey Luna took the ball almost every game in the circle and pitched her heart out. Shelby Brown's leadership stood out, and her ability to take our team on her shoulders."

Also graduating are Lexi Vander Griend, Livi Vander Griend, Lexi Holleman, Kristen Zoerink and Karley De Jager.
