Pioneers bounce back after opening loss

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMay 30, 2014

Nooksack Valley's softball team kept its season alive with two wins in loser-out games at the Class 1A Softball State Tournament on Friday, May 30, at Columbia Playfields in Richland.

The Pioneers started off with a 9-0 loss to Montesano, giving up 13 hits in the game.

They followed that up with a 4-1 win over Cashmere, holding Cashmere to just three hits. Nooksack Valley had 11 hits of its own in the win.

In the consolation second round, the Pioneers only managed four hits, but still pulled out the win.

"Anytime you're still playing on Saturday, you're doing well," Nooksack Valley coach Tom Harmon said in a phone interview. "We let some things get away from us in the first game, but the second two games we were gritty. There was no standout player, it was just a great team effort. Our pitchers hit their spots and we had clutch plays from a variety of kids."

Chloe Gardner was 3 for 10 on the day, and Arlissa Oettel went 3 for 11.

Nooksack Valley takes on Okanogan in the consolation third round at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31, at Columbia Playfields in Richland.
