Lummi's Medina second in 1600

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMay 30, 2014

Enrique Medina set a personal best in the 1600 and took second overall at the Class 1B Boys' Track and Field State Championships on Friday, May 30, at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

"He got boxed in early and didn't panic or try to go outside, he just hung with the crowd," Lummi coach Josh Shimek said in a phone interview. "He just hung with the crowd and the last 400 he kicked past them. He passed three or four kids the last 600 meters. He stuck with his plan and finished second.

The winner finished with a time of 4:31.07. Medina ran a 4:46.07.

"I expected a faster time, but I honestly expected to take second," Medina said in a phone interview. "It's a whole different pace with him in the front, so I expect to improve next year."
