Lynden's softball team is headed to its second straight trip to the Class 2A state semifinal after winning both games on Friday, May 30, at Carlon Park in Selah. It just took an extra inning to get there.

After a pitcher's duel played out for seven innings, the Lions finally struck in the eighth as they got two leadoff singles followed by an error. Lynden scored on a fielder's choice and then Kaylee Vis had a big two-RBI hit to seal the win.

"I was just telling myself I had to get a hit right now and score those two runs," Vis said in a phone interview. "It gave me a lot of confidence going into the next game. I proved I can do it and believed in myself."

Tanna Benson struck out eight and had what Lynden coach Steve Petersen described as the team's best defensive outing behind her to earn the shutout over eight innings.

The second game was all Benson, as she threw another shutout and struck out seven more for a total of 15 strikeouts on the day.

"She was lights-out pitching," Petersen said in a phone interview.

Benson also kicked off the second game by driving in the first four runs, including a two-run home run in the first to spark the Lions to a 10-0 victory over Capital.

"With her first hit, it jacked everyone up," Vis said. "Everyone was excited and we played with a lot of energy the rest of the game."

The hitting was contagious as the Lions got three hits apiece from Elisa Kooiman and Jenna Bonsen. Mandy Warner also homered on the way to a commanding victory.

Lynden faces Lake Washington at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 31, in Selah. The game is a rematch of last week's district contest, in which Lynden lost 14-7.

"It's a good chance to see how much better we got in a week," Petersen said. "We just have to throw strikes and see what happens."
