Arneson, Roth in play for top spot at 2A boys' state

Lynden's Ezra Arneson and Bellingham's Cody Roth are both in contention for a top-five finish after finishing day one in third and fourth, respectively, at the Class 2A Boys' Golf State Tournament on Wednesday, May 28, at Chambers Bay in University Place. The Red Raiders are also in a good position to make a run at the team title, with all four golfers making the cut.

Areneson's 72 was good for third after day one. He sits seven shots off the leader, Matt Maresse from Sammamish, who shot a 65 in the first round.

"I felt like I played pretty solid. I just missed some birdy putts," Arneson said in a phone interview. "(Maresse) might not play the same he did today, but he's a solid player. If I play the way I know I can, I think I have a shot."

Arneson's teammate, Alex Crabtree, also made the cut with a first-round 83.

"Alex worked hard to make the cut and he's tied for 22nd," Lynden coach Russ Dorr said in a phone interview. "They both worked hard on a tough course. I'm proud of everything they did today and wouldn't change a thing they did."

Roth is tied for fourth with a 73 after the first day, and also thinks he can make a run at the medalist position on the second day.

"I kind of scrambled and left a few out there," Roth said in a phone interview. "I missed a couple of putts, so I could have done better there. I'm just going to go out and make sure I hit well again in the right places and capitalize."

Roth's teammate Nick Nolan shot an 82 for the Red Raiders. Rees Kruhlak had an 83 in the opening round, and Taylor Paul shot an 85.

"Nick had a really rough start. He had a double or triple bogey on the first hole, then played solid the rest of the way," Bellingam coach David Bobillot said in a phone interview. "Rees had a fun day after being an alternate last year. Taylor struggled with putting. Hopefully tomorrow goes a little better.

If they all finish up there in final round, we'll do pretty well. Our chances (at the team title) are as good as anyone because we're the only team with four to make the cut."

Squalicum's Tavo O'Connell shot a 93 and missed the cut.

The Class 2A Boys' Golf State Tournament resumes at 7 a.m. Thursday, May 29, at Chambers Bay in University Place.
