Zombies vs. Survivors to take over Maritime Heritage Park May 31

Save Our City: Zombies vs. Survivors

Participants take part in a water balloon fight at the conclusion of the Save Our City: Zombies vs. Survivors event at Maritime Heritage park in downtown Bellingham, on June 27, 2010. The 2014 event, hosted by The Black Drop Coffeehouse, will kick off at noon and go through 3 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at Maritime Heritage Park.

Each year The Black Drop Coffeehouse organizes a massive game of water-balloon tag in downtown Bellingham with creepy, undead overtones. People dressed as zombies try to infect other players and survivors try to defend themselves with their water arsenals, all in the name of fun (and prizes).

Now in its fifth year, the competitive, team-based event has paired with a slew of downtown businesses and is an official City of Bellingham event.

The free event will kick off at noon and go through 3 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at Maritime Heritage Park. From the park, organizers will send teams on an item-finding mission through the infested streets of downtown.

Those worried about the family friendliness of a horde of brain-hungry zombies can rest assured: the only contagious elements of this event should be laughter and fun.

Teams can register for "Save our City V: Zombies vs. Survivors" at blackdropcoffeehouse.com, where users will find a list of rules and objectives.

A huge water fight will take place in the park after the event with the leftover balloons (The Black Drop promises 3,000 of them this year).
