Greenbelt section east of Boise closed

— A leaking canal has washed away the soil beneath a portion of the Greenbelt pathway making it unstable. County and canal officials on Monday afternoon closed the damaged section between Diversion dam and the Idaho 21 bridge because the risk of collapse due to a sinkhole has made it too dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians to continue using the pathway.

Boise Project Board of Control has shut off the leaking Penitentiary Canal, which parallels the Greenbelt pathway. Crews will start repairing the damage Tuesday. Ada County has not yet determined when the path will reopen.

The Idaho Transportation Department has placed an electronic reader board on Idaho 21 alerting motorists to be aware of cyclists, who are forced onto the highway for the short 300-yard detour.
