Wants diversity of ideas celebrated

COURTESY TO THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMay 27, 2014

We are bombarded these days with political correctness, a focus on groups, numbers and head counts. Recently WWU President Bruce Shepard weighed in. The future of diversity quotas on his campus concerns him.

There's an inconvenient truth here. By focusing so many resources on ethnicity and race, mental diversity is ignored. Isn't that what university life is supposed to be about? How refreshing it would be to see a college president excited about what his students are learning, about their knowledge of history, or science, or their chosen profession. How delightful if the ideal was concern about diversity of brain power - what's inside a student's head, not what color it is, or from what point of origin.
