Meridian, Heezen star at 1A track meet

May 24, 2014

Meridian's boys' track and field team is moving on five athletes, that span seven events, to the state tournament after a strong day at the Class 1A Tri-District Tournament on Saturday, May 24, at Woolsey Stadium in Shoreline. Among the five athletes, Kaleb Heezen and Collin Magnusson were multiple-event qualifiers.

Heezen qualified in the shot put, discus and javelin, while Collin Magnusson qualified in the 1,600 and 3,200.

"With the boys it was more heartbreak than anything," Meridian coach Patrick Ames said in a phone interview. "Spencer Blackburn had two sixth-place finishes three weeks after foot surgery. He came so close and was not able to make it."

Only the top five move on.

Blaine's Josiah Westbrook led the Borderites by qualiying in the 100, 200 and 400. Blaine also qualified Adam McShane in the shot put, Jon Fakkema in the discus, Gage Lott in the pole vault and Steven Crafts in the long jump.

Mount Baker will move on four athletes — Jesse Phan (800), Shelby Miles (3,200), Travis Lindsey (110 hurdles) and Izaiha Scwinden (300 hurdles) — and its 4x400 relay team to state.

Lynden Christian qualified just one on the boys' side in Cody Spoelstra (discus).

Nooksack Valley was the lowest-finishing boys' team from Whatcom County and didn't qualify anyone to state.

The 1A State Championships will take place on Friday, May 30, at Eastern Washington University.
