Lummi's Medina, Hoskins qualify for state

Lummi boys' track and field athlete Enrique Medina qualified for Class 1B State in four events and Deion Hoskins defended his title in shot put at the Class 1B Quad-District Track and Field Finals on Thursday, May 22, at Port Angeles.

Hoskins won the shot put with a put of 42 feet, 1 inch to defend his Quad-District title. Hank Hoskins was eighth in the shot put with a 36-04.25 put, just missing the cut for state.

"Deion had some good competition," Lummi coach Josh Shimek said in a phone interview. "There were some throwers from the second and fourth districts who were throwing over 40 feet, but Deion was able to edge them out."

Medina won the 1,600 for the Blackhawks with a time of 4 minutes, 51.59 seconds. He also took second in the 800 with a 2:09.21 in the 800, and third with a 54.44 in the 400.

In the 3,200, his final event, Medina was able to pull away from the fifth and sixth place finishers to take fourth in 11:38.74 and qualify in all of his events.

"Enrique had a goal all season to qualify in all four events and he was able to do that today," Shimek said. "The 3,200 was his last race of the day. He was a little gassed, but after the 1,600-mark he got a second wind and had a really good finish. He ran a really smart race."

The Class 1B Boys' Track and Field State Championships begin on Friday, May 30, at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.
