Ferndale girls struggle at districts

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMay 21, 2014

Ferndale's girls' track and field team didn't qualify any individual athletes into the championship round, but two of the Golden Eagles' relay teams will be moving on after day one of competition at the Class 3A Northwest District Championships on Wednesday, May 21, at Shoreline Stadium.

The 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams both took eighth to move on to the finals.

"Our girls are young," Ferndale coach Ted Genger said in a phone interview. "We're happy we qualified. But it's a bit of a rebuilding year."

Six other female athletes missed the cut for the championship round. The closest was Cheyenne Joshua in the 100.

The finals that took place on Wednesday didn't yield any state qualifiers for the Golden Eagles.

Jana Peterson took 16th in the 1,600, Katherine Chamblin finished 16th in the long jump, and Mckenna Rybka placed 13th in the javelin and discus.

The finals will be held on Friday, May 23, at Shoreline Stadium.
