9 Mariners advance to state, Bellingham trio alternates

Sehome's girls' tennis team advanced nine athletes to state, sweeping the top three positions in both singles and doubles at the Class 2A Bi-District Tournament on Wednesday, May 21, at Granite Falls High School.

In the singles championship, Sehome's Lauren Smith defeated teammate Andrea Clawson 6-4, 6-3.

In the doubles championship, Sehome's Madison and Taylor Harris defeated fellow Mariners Lizzie Friesen and Simone Hall 6-2, 7-5.

"(Sweeping the seeds) is really an unprecedented thing and it puts us in a great position for the state tournament," Sehome coach Bonna Giller said in a phone interview. "Lauren played great against Andrea. They've battled back and forth all season. In doubles, the No. 1 seed coming into the tournament was Lizzie and Simone, but during the season it was the Harrises and they had a great match."

Sehome's Ali Morrow advanced to the third-place singles match by defeating Lake Washington's Sara Tamai 6-1, 6-0. Bellingham's Kira Vazorka also advanced to the third-place match with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 win over Lake Washington's Marissa Kirk in the consolation second round.

Morrow then defeated Vazorka 6-1, 6-1 to take third place and the final singles position to state. Vazorka will be a state alternate.

Mariners Natalie Knops and Emily Webster took third after a 6-2, 6-1 win in the consolation second round and a 6-1, 6-1 win in the third-place match over Catie Welch and Ellie Iwerson of Bellingham.

"Natalie, Emily and Ali had outstanding wins today, especially in the third-place matches against Bellingham," Giller said. "They came up big for us today."

Welch and Iwerson will be state alternates. They advanced to the third-place match with a 6-1, 6-0 consolation second round win.

The Class 2A Boys' and Girls' Tennis State Tournaments are scheduled to begin Friday, May 30, at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle, and will run through Saturday, May 31.
