There is a lot of talk about the benefits of smoking electronic cigarettes as compared to smoking regular tobacco cigarettes. For those attempting to quit smoking cigarettes, I believe switching to electronic cigarettes is a great option. However, it has become an activity used more and more by non-smokers, who in turn become addicted to its nicotine content. One can get juice with any amount of nicotine ranging from 0 mg to 24 mg. However, in comparison, the average cigarette has 1.3 mg of nicotine. Though e-cigs do not have the rat poison, tar, and other poisons, they have more nicotine. If one buys nicotine juice with 24 mg of nicotine that is nearly the equivalent of a full pack of cigarettes.
Studies have shown that smoking an "e-cig" for as little as five minutes impacts the lungs by causing an increase in impedance, airway flow resistance, and oxidative stress. Finally, there is very little research on "vaping." I would not be surprised if years down the road researchers find consequences of smoking e-cigs and vaporizers, just as they did for the typical cigarette decades ago. I am not suggesting that e-cigs be banned, for there are many positives regarding quitting smoking. However, I find it important that research and awareness be increased.
