Four Ferndale girls advance to second day

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMay 20, 2014

Four Ferndale girls' golfers made the cut after the first day at the Class 3A Northwest District Tournament preliminaries on Tuesday, May 20, at Snohomish Golf and Country Club.

Annie Jane Burns led the Golden Eagles with a 101. Annie Leete from Oak Harbor was the top golfer for the first day with a 76.

"Annie Jane was very consistent," Ferndale coach Margie Hovde said in a phone interview. "It seemed like they all had a shaky start, but once they got settled down they came on much stronger. In the back nine Annie Jane was really solid. She had a lot of bogeys, which usually isn't a good thing, but it worked in her favor. She didn't have any big blowup holes."

Cienna Semsak also made the cut for Ferndale with a 104. Jillian Anderson had a 107 and Nicole Morgan was just under the cut at 110.

Brittany Olinger just missed the cut at 111 and Haizel Allen shot a 118.

"We've seen some good motivation and ball-striking," Hovde added. "Their focus has improved. It's going to be fun to watch tomorrow."

The Class 3A Northwest District Tournament resumes at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, at Snohomish Golf and Country Club.
