Golden Eagles earn spot at state

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMay 20, 2014

Ferndale's softball team is moving on to the Class 3A Northwest District Championship game after two wins on Tuesday, May 20, at Phil Johnson Fields.

The Golden Eagles handled Stanwood 12-2 in six innings for the first game of the day behind the strength of Drew Westford's bat.

Westford opened the scoring up with a 200-foot lined shot off the scoreboard.

"That was amazing," Ferndale coach Holly Hilton said in a phone interview. "After she got her hit, the rest of the team started hitting."

Westford would connect on another homer later in the game, this time a grand slam.

Lauren Maley was also successful in the circle, holding Stanwood to only two runs in six innings and striking out 13.

The second game was much closer, but Ferndale prevailed 3-1 over Mountlake Terrace.

Westford was the first run in that game as well as Kadence Kane's double in the first brought her in.

Maley struck out 12 in that game to seal the trip to the district championship.

Ferndale sealed its spot in the state tournament, but can win the district by beating Glacier Peak on Thursday, May 22, at Phil Johnson Fields.
