Bannerman, Slaughter keep state hopes alive

The Ferndale girls' tennis duo of Carly Bannerman and Shelby Slaughter came within one game of advancing to the championship match in the Class 2A Northwest Tournament. The two won their first match before losing their second on Tuesday, May 20, at Stanwood.

Bannerman/Slaughter defeated Marysville-Pilchuck's Sarah Cronin and Claire Esser 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 in the first round to prove they belonged.

"The Ferndale girls are as good as anyone down there," Ferndale coach Ed Sweitzer said in a phone interview. "I couldn't be more proud."

In the second round Mariah Orcutt and Alyya Sanford from Stanwood won 4-6, 6-4, 5-7 in a competitive battle that was the last match to finish and Sweitzer described the competition as a "crowd pleaser."

"They could have easily won that match too," Sweitzer said. "They're mad at themselves because they know they should have won."

The duo's confidence isn't shaken though, Sweitzer said, and they will look to qualify for state by winning both matches on Wednesday, May 21.

"They just have to figure out a way to put it away and get the points when made available," Sweitzer said.

Bannerman/Slaughter will start the day against Shorecrest's Lauren Rutter and Rachel Stevens.
