Baker's Verry wins first alternate to state

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMay 20, 2014

Mount Baker's Natalie Verry qualified as a state alternate at the Class 1A Tri-District Tournament on Tuesday, May 20, at Gold Mountain Golf and Country Club Cascade Course in Bremerton.

Verry was in a three-way tie for the final two state participant positions, but lost the one-hole playoff and became first alternate with a 97.

"Natalie played amazing. It's really great to see a freshman step up at Tri-Districts," Mount Baker coach Mike Lembo said in a phone interview. "Even at the playoff, that's a lot of pressure for a freshman and she played well. Everything came together for her. Every once in a while she hit an off drive, but she picked herself up."

Meridian's Anna Ratzlaff shot a 109 for the Trojans.

Also competing for the Mountaineers were Bria Henthorn (101), Baylee Backstrom (103) and Emma Brown (105). Lembo praised his seniors, Backstrom and Brown, for their solid performance this season in helping the team to a third-place finish in the conference.

The Class 1A State Tournament begins Wednesday, May 28, at Lake Spanaway Golf Course in Spanaway.
