Seven 1A boys' golfers advance to state

Seven Whatcom County golfers qualified for the Class 1A State Tournament with low scores at the 1A Tri-District Tournament on Tuesday, May 20, at Golf Mountain Olympic Course, in Bremerton.

Mount Baker's Kenneth Wilson, Matthew Multop and Dennis Kashubin, Blaine's Devon Boucher, Lynden Christian's Lincoln Olson and Meridian's Nick Rautenberg and John Kihm all made the cut.

Meridian's Sam Chambers competed in a playoff hole for a state alternate spot.

"It was a challenging course," Mount Baker coach Chad Hoidal said in a phone interview. "They weren't really happy with their scores. The course was tournament ready. The greens were fast. The cut was higher than last year. I think the three guys were just happy to survive to play next week."

Wilson shot a 79, which was good for fifth place overall. Multop shot an 88, and Kashubin shot a 91.

Boucher shot an 80, Olson shot an 80, Rautenberg fired an 85 and Kim scored a 90.

The Class 1A State Tournament begins Wednesday, May 28, at Lake Spanaway Golf Course.
