Ferndale's Lester second after first day

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMay 19, 2014

Ferndale boys' golf's Tanner Lester shot a 75 to take second overall in first-day action at the Class 3A Northwest District Tournament preliminaries on Monday, May 19, at Everett Golf and Country Club.

Trent Jones from Shorecrest won the medalist position for the first day, shooting a 72 to just edge Lester.

"That was Lester's career-best score," Ferndale coach Joe Wark said in a phone interview. "It's the first time any of our kids have played this course. It's very narrow and short with lots of trees. Lester felt good and the course suited him. He hit lots of greens and putted well."

The Golden Eagles' team score of 432 was good for fourth place at the end of the first day. Meadowdale sits in first with a 405, followed by Stanwood at 413 and Shorewood at 431.

All five of Ferndale's golfers made the cut and will look to qualify for state on the second day. Daniel Erickson shot an 84, followed by Keenan Souve's 88, Dane Larsen at 92 and Joel Quanz at 93.

"The top 14 go to state and Daniel Erickson is in the hunt," Wark said. "We haven't had anyone to state in a few years. Golf is a funny game, so we won't worry about it until it's all over. Lester has to play his game again. He's peaking at the right time."

The Class 3A Northwest District Tournament continues at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at Everett Golf and Country Club.
