The May installment of the Jazz Project's Art of Jazz series features the Grant & Matheny Duo, with Darrell Grant on piano and Dmitri Matheny on flugelhorn, performing at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 25, at Mount Baker Theatre's Encore Room, 104 N. Commercial St.

The duo will perform a diverse repertoire: classical works of Barber and Bach, jazz standards by Ellington and Monk, contemporary songs of Keith Jarrett and Sting, Negro spirituals, New Orleans tunes, American popular song, Argentinean tango and ambient music.

Exploring the lyricism, the swing, and the soul of songs, Grant and Matheny blend the elegance of European chamber music with the spontaneous spirit of American jazz, spicing each show with personal stories, impromptu vocal riffs and camaraderie.

Tickets, $16 general, $10 students, are available at jazzproject.org. Admission is free for Jazz Project members. Details: 360-650-1066, jazzproject.org.
