Extra patrols will target Whatcom drivers using cellphones, no seatbelts

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMay 18, 2014

Extra patrols will be out in Whatcom and San Juan counties in search of unbuckled and distracted drivers between Monday, May 19, and June 1.

These extra patrols will be part of the annual "Click it or Ticket" campaign.

Extra patrols working during that time period last year issued almost 3,000 seat belt violations and about 2,000 cellphone and texting violations statewide, according to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.

The Washington State Patrol, the Whatcom and San Juan County sheriff's offices and the Bellingham, Blaine, Ferndale, Lynden and Western Washington University police departments are participating.
