No one was injured when a newer model Volkswagen Beetle went up in flames Saturday evening, May 17 on Northbound Interstate 5 near milepost 268, according to Washington State Patrol.

It was not immediately clear if the car caught fire before or after the driver pulled to the shoulder, but the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames by about 5:34 p.m., Trooper Mark Francis said.

Both the driver and a passenger were able to safely get out of the vehicle, Francis said.

Traffic was briefly blocked in both lanes until firefighters extinguished the flames around 5:50 p.m. Both lanes had reopened by 6:15 p.m.
