Golden Eagles stay streaking, win 16th in a row

Ferndale's softball team started off with six runs in the first and cruised to a 13-1 Northwest Conference win in five innings over Bellingham on Wednesday, May 14, at Bellingham.

Lauren Maley, who pitched five innings, benefited from the offensive outburst to take the win in the circle for the Golden Eagles (19-1, 13-0 NWC). Scarlett Nyenhuis and Savannah Shawler combined for four hits and five RBI.

Bellingham (4-13, 1-11 NWC) added a run in the fifth as part of an attempted rally to keep the game going. Jasmin Lopez scored after stealing twice and then was drove in by Jamie Henderson's first hit of the season.

"It goes to show that these kids are not quitting at all," Bellingham coach Rick Ellis said in a phone interview. "I like the competitive fire."

Bellingham faces Concrete on Thursday, May 15, on the road. Ferndale enters the 3A District Tournament on Tuesday, May 20, at Phil Johnson Fields.
