One-run loss sends Golden Eagles home

Ferndale's baseball team saw its season end in a 5-4 consolation first-round loss to Meadowdale in the Class 3A Northwest District Tournament on Tuesday, May 13, at Ferndale.

Senior Brady Bauthues led the Golden Eagles, going 2 for 3 with two runs, a double and an RBI. Fellow senior Pete Pennylegion went 1 for 4 with an RBI.

"We came right out of the gate with four singles, hitting well," Ferndale coach Donny Hennigs said in a phone interview. "We played hard, it's just the way it's been all year where we've been on the wrong end of one-run games."

Meadowdale scored the go-ahead run in the seventh when a batter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Brady Shearer, another senior, and Kyler Brudwick each went 1 for 3 with an RBI. Shearer's hit was a double.

"The seniors have been a great group of kids to be around," Hennigs said. "You feel bad that it didn't end as well as it did last year, but they'll be better for it. We'll miss them next year."

Ferndale's other five seniors were Joey Akers, Kyle Baker, Cooper Clark, Andrew Littrell, Chase Olson and Colin Wagner.
