Ferndale duo advances to WESCO South Championship

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMay 13, 2014

The Ferndale doubles team of Carly Bannerman and Shelby Slaughter had two three-set wins Tuesday, May 13, at Glacier Peak High School to advance to the Class 3A WESCO South Tournament championship.

Bannerman and Slaughter rallied from a first-set loss to earn a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 win in their first-round match against Shorecrest's Karina Tntien and Molly Mrozek.

"In that second set they were down 1-5 and won 7-5," Ferndale coach Ed Sweitzer said in a phone interview. "I told them they needed to speed up their game. They needed to get quicker feet and hit their shots. Slaughter was able to get the ball over the other team's heads."

In the second round, the duo defeated Emme Davis and Anna Sneesby of Glacier Peak 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 to advance to the final.

"I can't say enough about how competitive they are," Sweitzer said. "They weren't going to lose."

Trina Byers, Holly Clark and the team of Kassidy Newman and Sophia Chahine also competed for Ferndale, but did not advance.

The championship match will be Wednesday, May 14, at Glacier Peak High School. If Slaughter and Bannerman win, they earn a No. 1 or No. 2 seed at districts, Sweitzer said.
