THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMay 10, 2014

SAM DIEHL

School: Sehome

Sport: Soccer

Year: Senior

Position/events: Defense

What he did: Mariners center back Sam Diehl has provided the Sehome boys' soccer team with tremendous leadership all season long. Diehl's performance during the Mariners' 1-0 regular-season finale win against Burlington-Edison was one of his career best. His work in the back helped Sehome sew up a district berth. Mariners coach John Sylvester said: "Without him being strong and telling guys to never give up, we would have been scored on a couple times."

Coach's quote: "He has been the heart and soul of the team. When I had to nominate him and other players for all-(conference), I said this has to be a candidate for all-state. I've even thought about retiring his jersey. You don't say that very often. I don't want to sound over the top, but it's accurate to how much he has meant to the program this year." - John Sylvester

TESS OWEN & KERI BRAUNER

School: Bellingham

Sport: Tennis

Year: Seniors

Position/events: Doubles

What they did: Owen and Brauner have put together a strong record, one of the best in the Northwest Conference this season, playing as doubles partners for Bellingham's talented tennis team. The duo moved up to No. 1 doubles against Blaine because of a team illness, and they won in straight sets. They also had a win against Ferndale's No. 2 doubles team to finish the regular season with a record of 14-2. All 14 of their wins have been of the straight set variety.

Coach's quote: "Tess and Keri have played beautifully together all season long. They do so many little things right on a consistent basis. I love to watch them play" - Steve Chronister
