Baker scores 44 runs in doubleheader sweep

Mount Baker's softball team racked up 32 hits and 44 runs and defeated Squalicum 28-0 in three innings in the first game and 16-1 in five innings in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday, May 9, at Squalicum.

The Mountaineers' Aleks Toivola struck out seven of the nine batters she faced and threw a perfect first game. She also went 3 for 3 with three RBI and four runs in the first game.

Emily Yost was a combined 6 for 8 on the day, with 10 RBI, two doubles and two home runs.

"Yost led the charge on offense," Mount Baker coach Ron Lepper said in a phone interview. "Aleks hit her locations, got the girls swinging and was aggressive. We have some girls who are role players and they got a chance to play and took advantage of that opportunity."

Squalicum had two hits in the second game, one from Brittney Jorgenson and one from Elizabeth Carter.

"It was tough, but the girls played harder and had a better attitude in the second game," Squalicum coach Loren Zenonian said in a phone interview.

Mount Baker plays next at 12:15 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at Friday Harbor. Squalicum's next game is at 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 12, at Lynden Christian.
