Nooksack Valley's Noah Rawls had himself a game.
The sophomore pitcher tossed seven innings, striking out 11 while giving up three runs in the process, but his two-RBI double in extra innings kept the Pioneers' baseball season alive when they faced elimination against Blaine on Thursday, May 8, at Pipeline Fields.
Nooksack Valley would plate another run in the bottom of the eighth to defeat the Borderites 6-5 in the consolation first round of the Class 1A District Tournament. The Pioneers will play the loser of the Lynden Christian/Coupeville game on Saturday, May 10, at Meridian High School.
"Noah, he battled. He didn't have his best stuff," Nooksack Valley coach Scott Gelwicks said in a phone interview. "Enough to get the job done."
Rawls approached Gelwicks in the eighth inning looking to get into the lineup after Gelwicks used a designated hitter throughout the game.
"No brainer," said Gelwicks of Rawls approaching him to hit in the bottom of the eighth. "One of those things of he's been swinging the bat well lately."
The decision proved a good one after Blaine plated two in the top of the eighth to take a 5-3 lead.
Chris Doll went 4 for 5 with two RBI for the Borderites. Tanner Myhre and Eben Rossmiller both had two hits for Nooksack Valley, with Rossmiller scoring two runs in the process.
