Fishing Derby Whatcom Falls

More than 400 participants cast their lines during the annual Bellingham Kids Fishing Derby at Whatcom Falls Park on June 13, 2002.

The Northwest Washington Steelheaders of Whatcom County will hold the annual kid's fishing derby from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Whatcom Falls Park juvenile fishing pond near the Bellingham Trout Hatchery.

The event is open to all kids 14 and younger.

To get to the pond, take the entrance onto Silver Beach Road off Lakeway Drive.

Children up to 9 years old will compete from 9 to 10 a.m., and those 10 to 14 years old will fish from 11 a.m. to noon. There will be boys' and girls' divisions.

Among the prizes the young trout enthusiasts can vie for will be sleeping bags, tackle boxes and two $50 gift certificates for the anglers lucky enough to catch one of two specially tagged rainbow trout that will be in the pond.

Free hot dogs and beverages will be provided. Members of the club will be available to help anglers.
