Mountaineers' big first inning aids win


Mount Baker's softball team got a quick start which spurred the Mountaineers to a 9-2 Northwest Conference win over Blaine on Tuesday, May 6, at Pipeline Fields.

The Mountaineers (10-5, 6-3 NWC) scored five runs in the first inning, three of which came off a hard hit down the right field line by Emily Yost, who went 3 for 5 on the day.

"Overall, it was pretty good day," Baker coach Ron Lepper said in a phone interview. "We were fortunate to get some timely hitting."

Blaine (10-7, 6-4 NWC) had eight hits, including three from Lyric Berry, who also had two stolen bases.

The Mountaineers face Squalicum on Friday, May 9, on the road. The Borderites play a doubleheader against Lynden on Thursday, May 8, at Lynden.
