Bellingham's girls' tennis team got a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins and earned a 6-1 Northwest Conference win over Blaine on Monday, May 5, at Bellingham.
Ellie Iwerson earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Blaine's (3-11, 1-6 NWC) Payton Saunders in the No. 4 singles match and the Bellingham (13-2, 6-1 NWC) team of Tess Owen and Keri Brauner notched a 6-0, 6-0 win over Emily Roe and Mandy Hayes in No. 1 doubles.
"I thought Tess Owen and Keri Brauner played really well again," Bellingham coach Steve Chronister said in a phone interview. "They've been playing excellent doubles all year and they stepped it up again."
Iwerson usually plays doubles, but when her partner, Catie Welch, was unable to play Chronister decided to let her play singles.
Saskia Dolk got the only win for the Borderites in No. 2 singles, defeating Kara Burns in a thrilling 0-6, 6-3, 7-5 match.
"It was a nice win for Saskia. They both played great in a highly contested match," Chronister said. "Kara came out really ready and Saskia maybe wasn't quite as much. There weren't any easy points, but Kara had a good (first) set. Then Saskia picked it up in the second set and they both did well in the third set."
In No. 1 singles action, Bellingham's Kira Vazorka topped Alex Henderson 6-2, 6-4.
"Alex really came back and made it tight, but Kira fought her off," Chronister said. "The scores just weren't as close as the No. 2 singles."
Blaine looks to bounce back at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at Sedro-Woolley. Bellingham takes on Ferndale at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at home.
