Lynden boys' soccer ends season with draw

Lynden's boys' soccer team battled to a scoreless tie with Sedro-Woolley in its Northwest Conference season finale on Monday, May 5, at Bender Fields.

Lynden goalkeeper Hector Gutierrez earned the shutout, saving a penalty kick to keep his team's hopes for a win alive.

"One of our players mistimed a tackle in the box," Lynden coach Drew Smiley said in a phone interview. "Hector dove to the right to make the save."

Despite finishing with a record of 5-5-6 overall and 4-3-5 in the NWC, Lynden will not advance to the postseason. Smiley was nonetheless impressed with his team's development this season.

"We only lost three games, so its unfortunate we didn't make the playoffs," Smiley said. "I'm sure Hector will be all-league. He's been great all year. Nicolas Parris and Gerardo Quiroz were instrumental all year."
