While city staff, the mayor, and Bellingham City Council ponder over the Alabama Safety Corridor Project, have any of them thought of safe wildlife crossings? Target Zero, the Washington state strategic highway safety plan of 2013 recommends:
- Employing engineering strategies to decrease wildlife and vehicle collisions;
- Increase active and passive roadway signage of wildlife crossings, which is also recommended by the Federal Highway Administration;
- Install animal detection systems to warn motorists of wildlife;
- Increase upfront funding for innovative wildlife crossings in projects built in high wildlife population areas, once again recommended by the Federal Highway Administration;
- Promote clear sight lines in areas with abundant wildlife;
- Utilize public service announcements in areas with high wildlife collision rates.
The City of Bellingham has obtained $1.4 million for safe projects along the Alabama Corridor. Shouldn't they follow the safety guidelines as recommended by the plan with an emphasis on valuing human life and trying to protect it?
