Sound Rowers and Paddlers will host its second annual race in Whatcom County on Saturday, May 3, with the Lake Whatcom Classic.

The race is scheduled for a 9:15 a.m. start from Bloedel Donovan Park, where it also will finish.

The 12-mile long course will take races around Revile Island and back, while the 51/2-mile short course heads to the second southern point along the lake's shore and heads back.

Evan Jacobs and Tyler Peterson set the long course record of 1 hour, 24 minutes, 17.2 seconds in a 2x in 2013, while David Jacobson set the short-course record of 37:39.08 in an HPK last year.

Race-day registration fees are $15 per person for Sound Rowers members and juniors and $20 for nonmembers. Boats of three or more competitors cost $10 per person.

There will be a mandatory boat inspection before boats are set in the water to help protect Lake Whatcom from invasive species at Bloedel Donovan Park.
