Lions tie Borderites on late goal

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDApril 29, 2014

The Blaine and Lynden boys' soccer teams battled to a 1-1 draw in a Northwest Conference matchup on Tuesday, April 29, at Pipeline Fields.

Blaine's Nick Butschli opened scoring in the 20th minute off of a pass from Garren Economy. Both coaches called it a beautiful goal.

"Nick's back was to the net and he received a bouncing ball," Blaine coach Giovanni Quesada said in a phone interview. "He faked right, turned 180 degrees the other way and kicked the ball while it was in the air into the left corner. Lynden has the best keeper in the conference, but it was just out of his reach."

Alejandro Huante evened up the game in the 75th minute, with Gerardo Quiroz earning the assist.

"It was a great combination play up the middle of the field," Lynden coach Drew Smiley said in a phone interview. "Gerardo changed the point of attack and Alejandro hit a low shot that just got inside the post. That's the best Blaine team I've seen in awhile."

Lynden hosts Ferndale at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at Bender Fields. Blaine plays at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at Sedro-Woolley.
