WWU's Stralser places fifth in decathlon


Western Washington University's Michael Stralser finished fifth, one point out of fourth, among 11 competitors in the decathlon after final-day action Tuesday at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Multi-Events Championships held at Tomlinson Stadium on the campus of host Central Washington University.

Stralser totaled a personal-best 5,999 points. He had personal records of 117-0 in the discus and 4:54.14 in the 1,500 meters, giving him five for the competition.

Stralser, who was sixth after five events Monday, began the day with a 16.29 clocking in the 110 hurdles. He also cleared 12-11 in the pole vault and had a mark of 113-0 in the javelin.

Alaska Anchorage's Cody Thomas won the decathlon for the second straight year with a point total of 6,617. Northwest Nazarene's Greyson Kilgore was second at 6,506.

Emily Stralser, Michael's twin sister, reinjured her hip while finishing 10th in the heptathlon. She had marks of 15-1 1/2 in the long jump and 75-9 3/4 in the javelin and ran the 800 in 2:57.35.
