Squalicum's Josh Holcomb hit the game-winning single to score David Stealy from third as the Storm took a 3-2 Northwest Conference win over Ferndale in eight innings on Monday, April 28, at Squalicum.
Stealy also took the win on the mound for the Storm (13-3-1, 8-1 NWC), pitching the final inning. Christian Jorgenson started the game, going four innings and giving up four hits, four walks while striking out three. Ben Wolters pitched three scoreless innings, striking out two.
"Ben did a thremendous job. He held it together for us," Squalicum coach John Inge said in a phone interview.
Brady Bauthues pitched eight innings for the Golden Eagles (9-8, 6-4 NWC), striking out six and walking just three.
"He's a senior, veteran pitcher, so we had to have quality at bats," Inge said. "He's a tough guy to beat, and it didn't come easily."
Stealy finished the game 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored. Kyle Little was 3 for 3 with a run, an RBI and a stolen base. Holcomb only had one hit, but it was the game-winner.
"Josh is a clutch hitter. I'm not surprised he came through," Inge said. "That's why when he isn't playing in the field, he's our DH."
Kyler Brudwick was Ferndale's only batter to get multiple hits, going 2 for 3.
Squalicum plays next at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Mount Baker. Ferndale's next game is at 4 p.m. Friday, May 2, at Lynden.
