Hommes qualified for NCAA D-II national championships

Seattle Pacific freshman Maddi Hommes (Lynden) set personal-best marks in five of the seven events and posted an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying score in the heptathlon at the on April 17 at the California Invitational in Azusa.

Hommes scored 4,510 points and placed 24th among the 49 competitors, most of whom ewer from Division I schools or club teams. The provisional minimum is 4,400 points.

Hommes set PRs in the javelin (125 feet, 4 inches), high jump (5-1¾), shot put (29-6½), 200 meters (26.27 seconds) and 800 meters (2:22.28). Her throw in the javelin was the second best overall and was an improvement of almost 7 feet over her previous PR.

She also had a time of 16.47 seconds in the 100 hurdles and a long jump of 15-6¼.

BROCKMANN IMPRESSES IN CLASSROOM, ON FIELD

Centralia College freshman Jeremy Brockmann (Meridian) was placed on the President’s Honor Roll for the fall of 2013 for posting a minimum grade-point average of 3.9. Brockmann also was selected for induction into Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

The engineering major was recognized for his outstanding academic performance at an on-campu ceremony on April 22.

Though he was recruited to play first base for the baseball team, Brockmann has seen most of his time at third base. He is hitting .333 (7 for 21) with two doubles and an RBI in nine games.

OLSON STRONG ON MOUNT AGAIN

Lower Columbia College pitcher Tanner Olson (Lynden) turned in a strong outing, as he scattered four hits and struck out three in seven innings of one-run work in a 9-0 victory over Green River on April 13.

“It took me awhile to get in a groove, but after I got in the groove I settled down and worked ahead,” Olson told the Longview Daily News. “I know that every game in league play counts, and I felt very comfortable.”

Olson owns a 4-1 record and a 3.14 ERA in 48.2 innings of work this season. In his eight starts he has allowed 44 hits and just nine walks while striking out 25 and has two complete games.

BIEHLE SCORES GAME-WINNING RUN

Northwestern College’s Jordan Biehle (Lynden Christian) got a ninth-inning leadoff single and scored the game winning run in a 2-1 victory over Briar Cliff in the second game of a Great Plains Athletic Conference softball game on Thursday, April 24, in Orange City, Iowa.

Biehle, a senior outfielder, had a pair of hits in the game for the Red Raiders.

In 41 games this season, Biehle is hitting .234 (26 for 111) with four doubles, 12 RBI and 11 runs scored.

Junior teamate Jill Kleinhesselink (Lynden Christian) is third on the team with a .338 average (54 for 160) with four homers, 11 doubles, 37 runs scored and 17 RBI.
