Blaine scores late in draw with Baker on muddy surface

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDApril 25, 2014

Blaine’s boys’ soccer team scored a late equalizer to take the 1-1 draw with Mount Baker in a Northwest Conference match on Friday, April 25, on a sloppy Mount Baker field.

“Half the field was water, the other half was mud,” Baker coach Jason Jorgenson said in a phone interview. “There wasn’t really much soccer played tonight. There were a lot of slips, a lot of falls, it was a big scrum. It was very entertaining to watch.”

The Mountaineers scored first off an Alex Tsyka corner kick that was headed in by Carlos Torrero.

Blaine evened it up in the 72nd minute when a scrum in the box popped the ball up to Baker’s Bryce Logan, who let it slip through his hands because of the muddy conditions.

“It was a very hard-fought game by both sides,” Jorgenson said. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t hold them off.”

Blaine (4-6-3, 2-6-2 NWC) plays Friday Harbor on Monday, April 28, at Pipeline Fields. Mount Baker (5-8-1, 4-5-1 NWC) faces Squalicum on Tuesday, April 29, at home.
