Squalicum's fielding key in win

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDApril 25, 2014

Squalicum’s baseball team played flawless defense, committing no errors in a 7-1 Northwest Conference win over Blaine on Friday, April 25, at Blaine. Squalicum was the home team despite playing on the road.

Ernie Yake, Kyle Little, Ben Johnson and Carter Nickelson each had an RBI for the Storm. Michael Guerrero had two RBI.

“We played great defense and threw strikes,” Squalicum coach John Inge said in a phone interview. “Nickelson in particular was outstanding at the plate and in the field. He made a couple of sliding catches in right field and played a great game.”

Jalen Kortlever was 2 for 2 for the Borderites. Cody Gobbato and Jonathan Starcer also had a hit each for Blaine.

“We made some mistakes and they scored a few runs,” Blaine coach Sean Linville said in a phone interview. “It was the best Miles (Peltier) has pitched all year.”

Squalicum hosts Ferndale at 4 p.m. Monday, April 28, at home. Blaine’s next game is at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 28, at Mount Baker.
