Mount Baker puts together big sixth inning to top Lynden

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDApril 25, 2014

The Mount Baker softball team rode a seven-run sixth inning to defeat Lynden 7-5 on Friday, April 25, at Mount Baker in a Northwest Conference matchup.

Lynden jumped on the board against starter Aleks Toivola in the top of the first, prefacing a Hannah Rothwell three-run home run in the top of the third to build the Lions’ lead to 4-0. Another run in the top of the fifth looked to have Lynden well on its way to a win, but Mount Baker finally started to get to starter Tanna Benson.

“We were just kind of off balance,” Mount Baker coach Ron Lepper said in a phone interview. “Benson did a good job mixing her pitches around. We couldn’t get anything solid at her.”

The Mountaineers were able to put together six hits mixed in with a few walks, scoring all seven of their runs with two outs to secure the big league win.

“The fifth inning, sixth inning we were able to put it all together,” Lepper said. “We put some better at-bats together and hung around.”

Rothwell finished 2 for 4 with three RBI, and Benson and Mandy Warner also added two hits for Lynden. Lacey Postlewait had a big day for the Mountaineers, going 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Toivola, who got the win in the circle, was 2 for 4 with two key RBI.

Mount Baker (9-3, NWC 5-1) next faces Burlington-Edison on Monday, April 28, while Lynden (8-4, NWC 5-2) isn’t in action again until Wednesday, April 30, against Lynden Christian.
