BELLINGHAM - U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Sherman and its 170-person crew are in Bellingham for the spring.

The ship, based out of San Diego, will be at Fairhaven Shipyard until June for an extensive 10-week repair.

About 80 items need work, including steel replacements, inspections, work on the propeller system and painting the interior and exterior, Fairhaven Shipyard project manager Bob Walton said.

Fairhaven Shipyard works on about five Coast Guard ships a year, but only one a year this size, Walton said. The Sherman is 378 feet long and was launched in 1968, according to the Coast Guard.

It's an older vessel, so it needs more repairs than usual, Walton said.

The ship returned to San Diego in March from a 50-day patrol in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. Its missions included search and rescue and stopping illicit drug trafficking off the coasts of Central and South America. In one incident, the smugglers threw contraband overboard and crew from the Sherman had to chase them in small boats, according to Ensign Colleen Patton,.

While in the Bellingham area, the crew expects to see the snow and visit local businesses.
