Lynden's boys' soccer team controlled the game and shutout Lynden Christian in a 2-0 Northwest Conference win on Wednesday, April 23, at Bender Fields.
Goalkeeper Hector Gutierrez got the scoring started in the 19th minute for the Lions on a free kick from 50 yards out. Miguel Gonzalez was fouled to allow for the free kick.
Gutierrez was also dominant in the box, Lynden coach Drew Smiley said in a phone interview.
"They put a lot of long stuff into the box that he just ate up," Smiley added. "It was kind of scrappy. There were a lot of fouls, it was very physical."
The second goal came right after Lynden took the kickoff for the second half. Gerardo Quiroz served the ball to Nicolas Parris, who took the shot.
"I think they were kind of asleep," Smiley said. "We didn't give away too many chances, even when they started sending some of their better players forward later in the game. It was our 'classico' ... it can go either way any time."
Lynden takes on Sehome at 4 p.m. Friday, April 25, at Northwest Soccer Park. Lynden Christian looks to bounce back against Sedro-Woolley at 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 25, at Bender Fields.
